I have started this poll after a post from a member asking for a chat rooom in pecobians.com.

I personally don't favor or support the idea of a chat room in a forum like pecobians.com.

I am posting my views regarding this topic below:
----------------------------------------------------------
PMs and threads are an ideal setup for me. If we introduce chatting then i feel that it will lead to smaller groups being formed and the whole thing about "altogether" will be lost. the same way things were in when we were in pec.

there is no heirarchy here based on any batch, sex, branch or anything. and i would like to maintain that. I can interact with my seniors in the same as i do with my juniors and batchmates.
---------------------------------------------------------

Also, I feel that we have other tools for chatting. If you want to chat with another member you can approach him/her via PM and then chat with them through yahoo or msn or whatever chat client u use.

Please cast your vote on this topic.

Yaar chatroom ki idhar pe kya zaroorat hai! would u beat yahoo or msn.
If at all you find someone interesting here, ur batchmate et al.. one has the PM mode and add them to ur yahoo list.
ab chatroom hone kaa nuksaan to i have already seen! I mean there was one futile attempt of adding a chat room somewhere in one of the college sites.

my opinion.. don't go for it!

I agree with both batman and simba on their views about a chat room. Yes, I do agree that this will lead to creation of smaller groups and might be harmful for the PEC community as a whole. Yet, I feel that chat room should be there on the website. I will list the points in favour of this. So, read on...
1. It can increase the participitation level of the group members.
2. Its a better way to communicate. At present this website is a passive mode for communication. There is no active two way instantenous communication available. Chat system can help in that.
3. Topics can always be better discussed and maybe some decisions can also be reached by chat communication.

Yet, as far as my thinking goes, the chat system should not be of the type 24x7 .. open to everyone. If its opened for all and for all time - it will just be chaos and in the long run can make people run away from the website.
What I am trying to say is that the chat rooms should work in the following manner only - There should be some definite reason for some one to start a chat. That reason with detail and possible outcome should be sent to a moderator/administrator of the site. If that is approved, it should be posted and if atleast 10-15 members agree that the dicussion should be there on it then the chat room can be opened at a predefined specific time in order to discuss that matter.
Its something similar to what we have been doing with weblogs/blogs on this site, and chat room can be just a better and faster way to do that.
I am just giving a roadmap on How it should work? The minor details/rules can be worked out by the community.

Navjot

well, what i think is that increase in participation thru a chatroom is not a sure shot call..cuz it may even lead to decrease in the same. Ppl might get more engrossed in chat rooms and may leave reading the threads...however, I'm still not completely against the chat room, I'd rather say I'm in favor of the forum style...

i am member of a number of forums and none of them have the chat-room feature.

it will lead to decrease in forum interaction (like shantanu stated). if people want to chat do just that. i know chat is in real time unlike the forum. but in a forum any new member or person reading the post for the first time, can keep track of how the topic discussion is developing over time and then give his/her views accordingly. a chat is gone as soon as the window is closed.

I completely agree with batman_wolverine in this matter.

For having a personal talk, forums have private message system.
Now suppose if we do have a chatroom for the sake of having a chatroom, it can lead to decrease in forum viewership & participation. Even though I do not post regularily at the forum but I certainly do go through all the posts.

In my opinion, there is no need as such for a chat system.

Arre divide what community. look around at the participation. Also chat is a great way to initiate the novices or virgins with the forum. PPl will surely trickle into forums after getting over the initial WOW effect of the chat room.

BTW i was one of the few ppl who suggested for the chat room.

@Vasu
Dude there absolutely no need to apologize. Forum are for discussing issues even if you know the majority may oppose you. That is what world needs more, food for thought and not bullets through the head. Just kidding.

I hope other forum members will agree and support Vasu for starting the debate Wink

I recently visited lovechandigarh.com and to my utter surprize i found a cht room named PEC. after seeing this a couple of questions arose in my ind.
1. Why is there a chat room named after pec among orter rooms which are general ,lounge, freinds techies?

2. Why dont they have pu,gcg, dav college rooms ?afterall they r too a prominent part of chd study circle?

in my opinion pecobians should have a snhat room as i have seen many people just fiting over a topic and using unnecessry space ultimately they fly away from the topic.may be they can fight better in a chat room.
