A question has been hovering around like a persistent fly, in my head since morning. It is a question that returns periodically to bother me....
"What is the significance of independence for our generation?"
Does it mean the independence to live our lives as we wish? Does it mean rebelling against tradition? Does it mean boozing, boogeying late in the night, and crushing innocents under our wheels thereafter?
I don't mean to paint a negative picture, but do we really understand what freedom is? We might be set to be the third largest economy in the world, we might be the outsourcing capital of the globe, we might be the providers of IT geniuses to Silicon Valley. But we are also a nation where 40% of our population finds it tough to find two square meals a day, we are the nation where millions go uneducated and unemployed, we are the nation that probably ranks among the most corrupt in the world.
Agreed! Our country has poverty, pollution, population. But can I say it is caused by the people living next door and not me?? Don't we all (or most of us) polish off a bag of chips, and nonchalantly throw the empty bag on the street. And aren't we the same people who say that "India is apolluted country"?
We stake claim to being the largest democracy in the world. But are we really free? Or are we still enslaved by our corruption, and heretical beliefs?
Do we stop fighting against the current just because we feel, "yaar, koi faayeda nahin hai, itne saal se jo chal raha hai wahi chalta rahega..."
Think.....
