Review – Batman Begins (the Game for PS2)

Well straight away I’ll say it gets 2 thumbs up. Here are the salient features the game throws at us:

Firstly you get to drive the updated batmobile at speeds of 150 mph, shoot rockets and make takedowns like in EA’s own game Burnout 3: Takedown.

There are few of the gadgets to use like optic cables to see thru keyholes, smoke bombs, HF transponders etc. The batarang plays a vital role in the game.

    Grim, gritty and dark environments

    Good dynamic lighting effects

Precise modeling of actors and crisp movement and actions

Responsive controls., The third person view with its camera rotation initially looks sluggish but soon one gets the reason behind it is to show the well laid out surroundings.

Looks a lot like 'Prince of Persia: Warrior within', not 'sands of time'.

The set details like I said before are impressive, true to the graphic nature of the original comic content

Physics looks good, chain/rope climbing, the cape behind Batman moves accurately as you glide or jump or fight.

The training monastery really looks good with its moving candle lightss and sudden edges and cliffs.

The indoors and the outdoors look equally good

The actual characters look true to life and also the voice overs by the actual cast is great.

The computer animated scenes feel just like the movie.

The basis of the game like the movie is fear. Make your opponents fear you and they will fall easily. Like I say, ‘do they fear the knight of the night or the night of the knight’. You have to sneak around and find ways to make the thugs and all afraid of you. Them beat the crap out of them and interrogate for info. This batman is true to its origin, mean and relentless. Unlike his previous water downed avatars this once looks more like the Spawn character. This time he is the hunter and he is hunting down his targets one by one.

As far as the gameplay goes, there is no frustration involved. It is easy to learn, and finding things is made easy by the appearances of markers. Jumping, movement fights all are fairly easy to get.

Finally this a must for Batman enthusiasts and is also a good buy for action fans. Additionally you get to see lot of original movie clips, interviews with the cast, game developers, writers etc. Also you can unlock various dresses/oufits of batman like the one in batman begins (always there), the various variations of the grey suit with yellow insignia.

I JUST HAD TO PUT THIS REVIEW ON June 17,2005 WHEN THE MOVIE IS GOING TO BE RELEASED IN INDIA

Also this needed a seperate thread bcoz the screenshots take time to load and general public would just have been frustrated.

@gan_ban: the game looks good by ur review but u missed one point. Tell us how was the storyline.. Cuz the most important part for me, as for several other gamers, is the storyline irrespective of how visually appealing the game is. Please do let us know abt ur comments on the storyline.

Well the story line is the same as the movie. It is not having a linear timeline just like the movie. There are no surprises. The story unfolds slowly. There are a lot of things going around that can be seen or heard that lets the plot grow. There is not much character growth as such put you do come to know a little about each of your targets by their thugs and all. It is neither a poor nor a Stephen King plot. It is a better version of a comic hero plot where you need to sneak and listen to stuff ( actually watch also) and then perform your actions. That being said the story is not really cheesy, it does look like that simply bcoz the game needed it that way to increase the length and the things to do. It is not boring, it goes on at a slow but engrossing pace. Unfortunately at times the dialogues come in the heat of the moment and one tends to miss it at times. I would say that for a good game the plot is engrossing enough. But if the plot is all that is needed the movie would be a better call. Each characters has not been dwelled in depths. What was needed of them is in the game.

Final word: the game is a good precursor to a movie that is intelligent and looking good.
