RSS is a defined standard with the specific purpose of delivering updates to web-based content. Using this standard, webmasters provide headlines and fresh content in a succinct manner. Meanwhile, consumers use RSS readers and news aggregators to collect and monitor their favorite feeds in one centralized program or location. Content viewed in the RSS reader or news aggregator is place known as an RSS feed.

Basically, with RSS its possible for webmasters to distribute content very easily. The content is provided in the form of XML standard which can be read using RSS aggregators.

Using a desktop aggregator, you can get news content from say Yahoo, HT, Indian Express etc, all this without the trouble of actually going to those sites.

Similarily, using a web-based aggregator you can syndicate the RSS content online for your website.
