I see myself creating software for the next gen communications technology (and am on that way right now, the difference is only that the technology is GSM right now which is gonna fade out in 10 yrs time)...

The picture abt whether I'll be self employed by then or not is a bit fuzzy...

I see myself as an Entrepreneur as well as a Writer....
The company will not be very large, but it would be the best place for anyone to work at.

I see myself teaching and doing research, after gaining similar experience in the US, in one of the IITs, the IISc or even one of the IIITs.

I was hoping that no one would ask this question Smile Since you have, I will attempt to answer it. Despite all the good things in our college, it is extremely lacking (and I say this euphemistically) in terms of research. There are almost no resources for the faculty that are actually interested in research, if there are any.

Personally. I would prefer to teach somewhere where there is an established atmosphere of research so that I can contribute not only by teaching the smartest students in the world (Indians) but also by making a name for my country.

resources such as???

vaise neways none of the current faculty is interested in research so that is why one cant see anything... If there are ppl interested in it resources can always be there...

Am saying this as i cant fathom what sort of resources do u need that cant be arranged easily for ur area of research(except likeminded ppl of course). I may be completely wrong as I'm quite in the dark abt the exact nature of resources that u need. Please correct me if that is the case...

Not quite. Yes. you are right in that the will to do research is definitely one of the prerequisites but even someone who wants to do research cannot do so without the following things (not all tangible, of course)

* Time to do research: Every faculty member needs to have his academic schedule such he has time to do serious research.

* You need good-quality, well-networked and well-administered labs with all the software that is needed for doing the research experiments.

* Professors need to be able to apply for research grants and make contacts with the industry research liaisons so that they can get money for the people to do research. Therefore, they need to be able to attend conferences and other technical symposia - translates into money and time resources.

* Qualified graduate students: The college needs to step up, spend some serious money and attract quality graduate students who will do the bulk of the research with the professor.

So it all boils down to how much the college emphasizes research. If the dean/director of the college thinks research is important, he can create an atmosphere that encourages people to do research. Just because I am interested in doing research only means that I can go so far.

I love PEC as much as the next PECobian but we need to realize that ours is not a research-driven institution.

This is not particularly directed towards nitin but to all in general.
Isn't this a vicious circle. I mean we dont have:
1. provisions for research time in profs' schedules cuz no prof currently "needs" such time

2. softwares to aid research in labs cuz again these softwares are not needed unless a prof wants to research

3. research grants and industry liasions cuz nobody applies for em. I'm sure that our coll does have the provisions for the same. Heck, even students can apply for em as the last princi himself told me we cud do that...Ans the college does pay for the profs as well as students to attend the technical conferences and symposia..

4. And the college doesnt spend money to attract quality graduate students for research cuz theres no prof currently interested in serious research...

So, until ppl geared towards research join as profs, we can never have these things but these ppl will join only if these things are already there...
And one cant attract ppl by doling out huge salaries as ours is a govt college where salaries are as per AICTE norms and cant be changed by the govt.

Can anyone point out the solution to this?
What I cud think of was what better than pecobians who want to research joining the coll. They'll face a few hardships in the beginning but I'm sure it ll be smoother soon.
But again, its easier said than done as I'm not the one wholl be facing those startup trbls...

Any ideas??

I see myself creating software for the top organizations of the world.
Its just that I feel some guys are made for "IT".

When I try to focus beyond the 10 years, the ball tells me that I'll 'be' the organization.
